Microsoft Launches Windows Phone in India

Image
Microsoft is today launching Windows Phone in India. These phones are, infact, the second generation of phones launched earlier outside India. Codenamed “Mango” the Windows Phones bring a lot of productivity benefits to consumers. Windows Phones are built with focus on people rather than getting tasks done or putting applications in charge. This focus on people infests itself with native integration of the phone with social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yahoo Mail, Live Mail, GMail. Once you associate your IDs at these services, the phone automatically, integrates recent information from these sites into the phone. Let’s see where this could be useful: Let’s say I have a friend whom I have not been in touch with for a few months. He/ She moves locations and updates their phone no. in facebook. With Windows Phone, this updated number would automagically find its ways to the address book and I can call the friend on the new number. Now, if I was interested in knowin...

Installing NoDo on Windows Phone 7

Image
Got lucky today when I got the Nodo update on Windows Phone 7. My phone is a HTC Mozart Device. I produce below the sequence of steps that I had to undertake to update my phone with NoDo update. the first indication that you have the update is when phone alerts you of the same. It tells you that you will need to connect with Zune software on your PC to get the update. So, that’s what I did! Screenshots from the Zune follow: The Windows Phone 7 during the Nodo update: The Copy Paste operation on Windows Phone 7: the selection works by dragging the arrow handle once you have selected a single word. clicking on the “Copy” icon copies the selected text. I pasted the selected text from Outlook to OneNote (cross-application). You paste by clicking on the “Paste” icon in the gray bar above the soft keyboard. The final version of software on Windows Phone 7: Final OS version: 7.0.73900 The update took over 30 mins to complete. You should budget this time if yo...

Indian Mobile Users still Far Away from Internet

Image
Here’s a question that I have been asking whenever I have had more than a handful of people around me - “How many of you use internet on your mobile phone?” And invariably the response were horribly negative. We frequently hear the great number of mobile phones that Indian consumers have been lapping up.. will this communication revolution lead to information revolution? The answer reflects in the recently released report by IAMAI. Here’s a quick snapshot of how the mobile usage in India looks like: From the hugely touted Indian mobile penetration, only 0.4% users actively use Internet. And here is what my worry is: Mobile adoption in India is leading to telecom revolution while the larger information revolution is still far away. The future of the mobile internet seems to hold some promise though. The young generation of school going and college going kids constitute around 68% of this mobile online population. When this generation grows up (probably in 10 years) they will ...

How to make your Windows Mobile speak Hindi

Image
You’ve seen numerous Windows Mobiles in the market from makers like Motorola, HTC, imate, Samsung (in fact only Nokia doesn’t have a Windows Mobile phone!!).. what you have NOT seen is the Windows Mobile displaying local Indian languages like Hindi.. watch these screenshots from my HP Windows Mobile phone:      Watch the day of the week in Hindi alongwith the name of the month. Even the appointments have the days mentioned in Hindi. So why hasn’t Windows Mobile been able to show Hindi fonts? While Windows Mobile supported Unicode, the core issue was the font engine in WM did not know (was not built) how to render complex characters. The reason why it was not done for WM, was that made the font engine heavy and OEMs didn’t want to increase memory footprint for that. Also, there were no fonts natively for Hindi on WM. All that changes with this application install that enables the following features. An inscript Hindi keyboard: Any WM application that suppor...

The dangers of joining the iphone party

Image
This post is thanks to the meeting with an iphone enthusiast over the weekend. Now this iphone enthusiast isn’t from India and has been using an iphone for some time alongwith his Mac. While checking out the cool interface of the iphone we casually started to compare the features of his iphone with the HTC Windows Mobile we were carrying. this is more relevant as airtel and vodaphone are planning to come out with iphone 3G soon in India (for airtel the launch is fixed on Aug 22nd)… while the pricing is not yet disclosed, i would assume that they may cost around 30K in India. and the irony is that in India there isn’t a single 3g network and the ones most likely to get are the govt. carriers like BSNL :) What follows below are some discoveries we made in that friendly comparison: iphone has cooler interface than Windows Mobile. Agree. One of us has tried to include a iphone shell (iPhonz) on Win Mobile but the quality of that shell was really bad and the phone had to be rebooted.. i...

Microsoft licenses Flash lite for Windows Mobile Devices

At the recently concluded Mix 08 , Microsoft showcased Silverlight 2.0 working on Windows Mobile. In addition, Nokia licensed Silverlight to display on its mobile device. In a recent news, it is said that Microsoft is licensing Flash Lite for display with Windows Mobile Devices. Here's what ZDNET thinks of it: http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8240 Now i don't think what ZDNET thinks is at all on the mark for the following reasons: it has already being displayed at Mix 08 and I don't doubt that it is going to come out soon. If MS has to dissect Flash lite to learn it, there is no need to license the same. Why wud MS want to make Adobe look relevant, when it is fighting Silverlight war with Flash and Expression suite war with Adobe designer suite? I think: Microsoft will continue to prefer Silverlight for its mobile devices. Flash Lite provides Windows Mobile owners additional avenue of using content. In the new found Interoperability "karma", Microsoft may ...
